Plot summary: Todd Hewitt awakens inside a vast room in Haven, the capital city of the "New World" the only light in the room coming from a stained glass window high above him. From the shadows around him comes a voice belonging to Mayor Prentiss telling him "Your Noise reveals you, Todd Hewitt." The first thing Todd does is ask loudly with his voice and his "Noise" where Viola is because the last thing he remembers is carrying her into the town square while she slowly dies from a gunshot wound in her chest. The mayor tells Todd that "I will be the one doing the asking here" Todd keeps asking and Mr. Collins, who was a corn farmer but is now part of the mayor's army, punches him in the stomach as if from nowhere. As Todd leans forward in pain he discovers he is held back by rope binding his limbs to the chair. The mayor tells Todd that he is "President Prentiss now" and asks him what Viola's name is even though he knows it already; when Todd refuses to say her name Mr. Collins punches him again. This continues until Todd gets struck and his chair topples over. Mr. Collins picks the chair up and the Mayor starts to place bandages on Todd's body, while he is doing this he tells Todd "I am not the man you think I am." As the painkillers in the bandages start to work Todd tells the Mayor Viola's name, Mayor Prentiss orders Mr. Collins to lock Todd up now that he has what he desired.
Narrative Elements: Characterization of Mayor Prentiss. Mayor Prentiss is described as being dressed "In his good clothes, crisp and clean as ever, as if there ain't a man underneath there at all." Later in the chapter Todd says that he is "a man who's made himself of stone." Todd also calls him "a liar and a murderer" but at the end of the chapter Mayor Prentiss says "I do care, Todd. There will be time for you to learn the truth of that" while the Mayor is talking he places bandages over Todd's bruises and injuries from the beating.
Narrative Elements: Conflict. Todd Hewitt has an external conflict in this chapter. His external conflict is with Mr. Collins and Mayor Prentiss. During the chapter Mr. Collins punches Todd when he is rude or not cooperating with the Mayors questioning once knocking over the chair Todd was tied to. During most of the chapter Todd does not answer Mayor Prentiss's question but when the Mayor applies bandages to Todd's injuries the drugs inside them make Todd give up and tell Mayor Prentiss Viola's name.
