The viewing of the film, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, has furthered my understanding of Psychology and Neurology in the following three ways namely, the use of ECT as a form of punishment, the use of frontal lobotomy as a form of punishment and the use of talk therapy as a form of control.

The viewing of One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest furthered my understanding of Electroconvulsive therapy as a form of punishment. “Electroconvulsive therapy is a standard psychiatric treatment in which seizures are electrically induced in patients to provide relief from psychiatric illnesses.”1 While ECT was used in the film as a punishment it is typically used as a treatment for severe depression and Schizophrenia. The electric shock is usually administered two or three times per week until the patient show signs of improvement. In conclusion, the viewing of the film One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest increased my understanding of ECT as punishment.

Frontal Lobotomy is the second treatment that I learned about from the movie. “It consists of cutting or scraping away most of the connections to and from the prefrontal cortex.”2 in the movie, Lobotomy was used as a punishment, by the late 1970's the use of lobotomy in general practice had stopped. Walter Jackson Freeman utilized Transorbital Lobotomy which was later known as Icepick Lobotomy because an icepick was used to pierce thin bone under the eyelid. Freeman also traveled across America in his “Lobotomobile”.

The third treatment featured in the movie was Group therapy. "Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which one or more therapists treat a small group of clients together as a group."3 Group therapy in the movie was used by nurse Ratched as a form of control but it is widely used for the treatment of depression and victims of sexual abuse. Group therapy in the USA was created by Joseph H. Pratt, Trigant Burrow and Paul Schilder.

I've decided that the red guy will be Modern Human. Cause he was created to defeat Mega Man, right? Just like Shadow?
